St Andrew’s Home, Joppa

In 1858, the Community of St Andrew of Scotland, under the auspices of the Scottish Episcopal Church, opened a Preventive Home for girls and women in Joppa. It housed 40-50 girls for a period of two years. In 1919, operations were transferred to the Sisters of The Community of St Peter the Apostle, who ran the Home until it closed in 1953. An advert for the sale of the building notes the ‘extensive property’ with a garden and tennis court, a ‘chapel of considerable beauty’ and three public rooms1.
