Sister of the Good Shepherd, Dalbeth, Tollcross, Glasgow

A convent house was built in Tollcross in 1851 to house 30 girls between the ages of 9 and 141, who were taught to knit, make clothes, and work in the kitchen. In 1892, it became an Industrial School and grew to accommodate 150 girls. By 1910, an inspection called the school as ‘one of the very best of its kind’2, variously described in other reports as ‘bright and comfortable’, with large gardens. In 1933, in line with the introduction of the Children and Young Person’s Act, it became an Approved School. It relocated to Renfrewshire in 1949 and closed in 1968. The original building was later demolished.
