Lochburn Home

The Glasgow Magdalene Institution for the Repression of Vice and Reformation of Penitent Females was established in 1858. It leased several properties before funding the construction of a purpose-built Institution. Lochburn Home opened in 1864 as a home and laundry. In its first 30 years it claims it helped ‘nearly 5000 young women’. It closed in 1958 ‘following an inquiry into the alleged ill-treatment of inmates’1.
