Children's Shelter, 142 High Street
The Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSSPCC) opened a shelter in 1884, ‘open at all hours, day and night, to receive children in need of its protection’1. In 1934, 211 children were admitted but most were returned to their parents as their living situation returned to normal2. In 1980, the Society decided to close the shelter as social work practice moved towards keeping children within their families. The RSSPCC is now known as Children First3.
